John Basarab

John Basarab is an Associate Professor in Livestock Genetics/Genomics at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. His work focuses on improving beef cattle production through genomics, feed efficiency optimization, and climate resilience strategies. He directs Beef Operations at Livestock Gentec and has authored/co-authored over 300 scientific articles.

Research emphasizes genomic tools like EnVigour HX, DNA pooling techniques, and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. He has led global collaborations and manages one of Canada's largest beef cattle genotype-phenotype databases.

Awards highlight his extension work and industry contributions, including the 2010 Canadian Animal Industries Award and 2020 Don Matthews Memorial Award. He has presented over 250 international seminars and contributed to veterinary education programs in China and Mexico.
