About
Professor John S. Baras holds joint appointments at the University of Maryland in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Institute for Systems Research (ISR), where he was the founding director. He is the Lockheed Martin Chair in Systems Engineering and directs the Maryland Hybrid Networks (HyNet) Center. As a Hans Fischer Senior Fellow at TUM-IAS, he focuses on Networked Cyber-Physical Systems (NetCyPhy). His research spans systems theory, communication networks, and network security. He has pioneered work in event-triggered control, trust evaluation in networks, and cyber-physical systems integration.
Baras has received numerous accolades, including AAAS and SIAM Fellowships, and holds nine patents. His work on HughesNet® revolutionized satellite internet delivery. He also serves as a guest professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. Key research themes include stochastic control, multi-agent systems, and secure communication protocols.
Publications highlight contributions to optimal sampling strategies, consensus algorithms in dynamic networks, and trust-aware crowdsourcing. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications in autonomous systems, smart grids, and robotics. Ongoing efforts emphasize resilient network design and information-theoretic approaches to control systems.
