John Ågren

John Ågren is a Professor Emeritus at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden, and a Visiting Professor at Northwestern University, USA. He holds a Master of Science (1975) and a TeknD in physical metallurgy (1981) from KTH. His career includes roles as Chair of Materials Science and Engineering (1991–2017), Department Head (1983–1993), and leadership in multiple academic and industrial initiatives. Ågren’s research focuses on phase transformations, diffusion, and computational materials science, with applications in steel alloys, cemented carbides, and superalloys.

He has advised over 30 PhD students and received prestigious awards such as the Hume-Rothery Award (2011), Gibbs Award (2019–2021), and ASM Gold Medal (2020). His work includes founding Thermo-Calc Software AB and leading international conferences. Key contributions involve modeling diffusion-controlled processes, bainitic ferrite growth, and sigma-phase precipitation in stainless steels.
