Johannes Hallmann

Prof. Johannes Hallmann serves as Head of the Institute for Epidemiology and Pathogen Diagnostics at the Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) in Braunschweig since 2019. He concurrently holds an Adjunct Professorship at the University of Kassel's Department of Ecological Agricultural Sciences since 2014 and a teaching position at Humboldt University of Berlin since 2016. With over 25 years of experience in plant pathology, his career spans federal research institutions, international collaborations, and academic appointments across Germany and globally.

His educational foundation includes:

• Agricultural Sciences studies, University of Bonn (1985-1990)

Prof. Hallmann's research centers on plant-parasitic nematodes, examining their ecological distribution and economic impact in German agriculture with specialized focus on vegetable production, high-value crops, and organic farming systems. His investigations into nematode biology, epidemiological patterns, host-pathogen dynamics, and interactions with beneficial microorganisms drive innovations in sustainable crop protection. This work integrates field diagnostics with laboratory analysis to develop practical management solutions for agricultural stakeholders.

Prof. Hallmann maintains active scientific engagement through leadership roles including the EPPO Diagnostic Panel on Nematodes and editorial positions for Biocontrol Science and Technology, Journal of Plant Disease and Protection, and Nematology. His service as former Board Director of the German Phytomedical Society (2015-2020) and membership in the European Society of Nematologists demonstrates commitment to advancing the discipline. At JKI, he leads multidisciplinary teams addressing plant health threats through integrated research approaches that bridge fundamental science and applied agricultural solutions.
