About
Johanna Scheer is a Research Fellow at the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Umeå University. Her postdoctoral research focuses on the complex interactions between permafrost thaw, vegetation change, and herbivory in Arctic regions. This work is part of the EU Horizon ILLUQ project (WP2 – Plants and Animals), led by Associate Professor Matthias Siewert. Key objectives include mapping permafrost thaw impacts on vegetation productivity and herbivore activity, and linking these to environmental patterns via satellite data analysis.
Her research group affiliation includes the Biogeochemistry group. Recent publications (2025) highlight transdisciplinary analyses of permafrost thaw risks affecting up to three million Arctic residents. The study integrates ecological and socio-economic dimensions to address climate change challenges in vulnerable regions.
