Johann Chapoutot

Professor Johann Chapoutot is a historian at Sorbonne University, specializing in modern European history, particularly National Socialism, Nazism, and authoritarian regimes. He has been a visiting researcher at Humboldt University and Freie Universität, and is a member of L'Institut universitaire de France.

His research focuses on the ideological foundations of National Socialism, its normative system, and its seductive appeal in the 1930s and 1940s. He has authored influential works such as Fascisme, nazisme et régimes autoritaires en Europe, The Law of Blood, and Free to Obey (2013).

As the 2023 Hugo Valentin Lecturer at Uppsala University, he explored the ideological underpinnings of National Socialism, emphasizing its utopian promises of liberation and protection despite its destructive legacy.
