Johan Wänström

Johan Wänström is an Associate Professor at Linköping University's Department of Culture and Society (IKOS), affiliated with the Centre for Local Government Studies (CKS). His research focuses on municipal and regional governance, including political decision-making processes, citizen engagement with local politics, and inter-organizational collaboration between political bodies and administrative structures.

He holds dual PhD degrees in Culture and Society (Linköping University, 2009) and Communication (University of Oklahoma, 2006), alongside multiple bachelor's and master's degrees in Communication and Political Science from the University of Oklahoma and Linköping University.

Key research interests include citizen reactions to controversial local decisions, the dynamics between elected officials and municipal administrators, and policy coordination in regional development. His recent work examines how emergency situations impact traditional Swedish decision-making frameworks and the role of local media in sustaining democratic processes.

Wänström’s publications analyze Swedish municipal systems, coalition politics between major parties, and socio-economic disparities across municipalities. He is a member of CKS, contributing to studies on local governance and democracy.
