Johan Strang is a Professor at the Department of Cultures, Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki. He holds the title of Docent and serves as a supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Political, Societal and Regional Change. His research focuses on Nordic politics, society, and history, with emphasis on Nordic cooperation, democracy, human rights, and intellectual history. Currently leads the Academy of Finland project 'Neoliberalisation of Nordic Democracy' and participates in the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond-funded 'Neoliberalism in the Nordics' programme.
Research interests span 20th-century Nordic intellectual history, legal realism, and the impact of neoliberalism on democratic frameworks. Active in scholarly networks across Europe and Scandinavia, collaborating with institutions like Uppsala University and Brill Publishers. Recognized for contributions to Nordic studies through 126+ publications including books, journal articles, and edited volumes.
Holds the 1996 Cafémester Backgammon award. Engaged in academic activities including organizing conferences, peer reviews, and media engagements on Nordic political issues (e.g., NATO membership debates). Serves on editorial boards and contributes to policy discussions through media interviews and public talks.
