Johan Rönnby is Professor of Archaeology and Director of the MARIS Marine Archaeological Research Institute at Södertörn University, where he has been teaching and researching since 1997. He obtained his PhD from Stockholm University in 1995 and holds associate professorships (docent) from both Stockholm University (2000) and the University of Helsinki (2008). His international engagements include visiting professorships at Skidmore College (2005) and Middlebury College (2015), along with external examiner roles at the University of Southampton.
Rönnby's research specializes in maritime archaeology, focusing on Baltic Sea shipwrecks, coastal landscapes, Viking Age lake dwellings, and human interactions with aquatic environments. His work integrates underwater excavation, cultural landscape analysis, and historical reconstruction to explore long-term maritime societies.
His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on Baltic Sea shipwrecks spanning from Viking settlements to Renaissance naval warfare. Recent works emphasize deepwater archaeology using advanced technology (ROVs), battlefield archaeology, and preservation challenges in anoxic environments.
