Johan Milian is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography at University of Paris 8 within the Faculty of Territories, Environments, Societies. His expertise centers on environmental and rural geography with emphasis on spatial planning, environmental governance, and socio-ecological dynamics in protected areas and nocturnal environments.
Research focuses on environmental geography, rural geography, and territorial transitions with specific expertise in protected areas management, nature conservation policies, nocturnal environment studies (including light pollution governance and darkness relationships), and citizen-driven environmental engineering. His work integrates biodiversity conservation, landscape analysis, and natural risk management within rural and mountainous contexts across European and Mediterranean regions.
Milian leads the CNRS Night Environment Observatory (OEN) established in 2022, evolving from the RENOIR Collective, conducting interdisciplinary research on light pollution through projects like Trames noires (2020-2022) and FENOIR in Réunion Island. He directs the Spatial TreeP project on treeline dynamics in the Pyrenees and previously managed CAP-IDF on land governance in Île-de-France, alongside studies in Port-au-Prince and Pyrenean pastoral systems.
As an educator, he teaches Protected Areas and Spatial Planning, Landscape Analysis, and Environmental Policies across undergraduate and graduate levels while supervising research theses. Formerly Deputy Director of LADYSS laboratory (2019-2024) and co-responsible for the Master ECCE program (2013-2020), he co-leads the LUMEN Research Group and serves on the French Committee of the IUCN while administering UNADEL.
