Johan Lundberg is an Adjunct Professor in psychiatry at the Karolinska Institutet's Department of Clinical Neuroscience. As a Senior Physician in Psychiatry and Head of the Mood Disorders Section at Northern Stockholm Psychiatry Clinic, he leads research on molecular brain imaging and neuropsychopharmacology in affective disorders. His work spans depression, anxiety disorders, and psychedelic therapy, particularly in cancer-related depression.

Research focuses on serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and glutamate systems using PET, EEG, MEG, and fMRI to study antidepressant mechanisms. Key projects include CAPSI (psilocybin in cancer depression) and PSIPET (phase II psilocybin trial). His 15 most recent publications demonstrate expertise in treatment-resistant depression, neuroimaging biomarkers, and pharmacological interventions.
Scientific recognition includes 2023 Arvid Carlsson Foundation Prize for outstanding research. Grants from the Swedish Research Council, Swedish Cancer Society, and Norrsken Mind Foundation support his work. As Principal Investigator, he leads a multidisciplinary team including Maria Beckman and Mikael Tiger.
