Johan Ahlback

Johan Ahlback is an LSE Fellow in Quantitative Methods at the Department of Methodology, London School of Economics. His expertise spans Field Experiments, Behavioural & Distributive Politics, and Electoral Integrity. He holds a PhD in Government from LSE (2020) and an MSc in Political Science from Helsinki University.

His research focuses on electoral integrity in low-income democracies, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, exploring how politicians' information about constituents shapes spending decisions. Notable fieldwork includes a 2016 Malawi study on aid allocation and electoral transparency. Methodologically, he employs experimental and quasi-experimental designs.

He contributes to understanding distributive politics and representation in African democracies, with publications including a 2021 field experiment on foreign aid's impact on public spending.
