About
Joerg Gsponer is a Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Medicine. He directs the Gsponer Lab at the Centre for High-Throughput Biology (CHiBi), focusing on intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), protein interaction networks, and their implications in neurodegeneration and cancer. His lab develops computational tools like GraPES, LIST, and IDRBind to study biomolecular condensates and protein interactions.
Education:
- MD, University of Lausanne (1997)
- PhD in Biochemistry, University of Zurich (2002)
- Post-doctoral Fellow, University of Cambridge (2003)
- MRC Research Fellow, Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge (2006)
Research Interests: Gsponer's work explores how IDPs regulate cellular signaling and disease. Key areas include: 1) Dynamics of protein-DNA/RNA interactions; 2) Phase separation in biomolecular condensates; 3) Autoinhibition mechanisms in cancer; 4) Computational modeling of protein networks; and 5) High-throughput methods for interactome mapping.
Publications: Recent articles emphasize computational biophysics (e.g., AlphaFold applications), phase separation, autoinhibition in cancer, and neurodegenerative pathways. Trends include integrative modeling, tool development for disorder prediction, and translational insights into therapeutic targets.
Awards: None listed.
Advising & Tools: Gsponer mentors students and postdocs in structural/computational biology. His lab created open-access resources like the Autoinhibited Protein Database and NeuroGeM (genetic modifiers in neurodegeneration).
Lab & Teams: The Gsponer Lab collaborates globally on proteomics, NMR, and machine-learning projects. Key members include Jennifer M. Bui and Nawar Malhis.
