Joe deVera is an Assistant Professor at the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts, Washington University. He teaches in the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, and Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art programs. His work explores intersections between historiography, human tragedy, and the aftermath of mass conflict, drawing from personal experiences as a U.S. Marine Corps veteran deployed to Iraq. He holds a BFA from California State University, Fullerton, and an MFA from Yale University.

deVera’s research investigates power structures and imperial machinery through autobiographical and art-historical lenses. Awards include the Vermont Studio Center Full Merit Fellowship (2022) and the Self-Help Graphics Professional Printmaking Atelier Invitational (2020).
