Joe Loewenstein

Joe Loewenstein is a Professor of English at Washington University, serving as Director of Undergraduate Studies in Comparative Literature, Director of the Humanities Digital Workshop, and Director of the Interdisciplinary Project in the Humanities. He holds affiliations with the Department of English, the Humanities Digital Workshop, and the Interdisciplinary Project in the Humanities. His education includes a PhD from Yale University.

His research focuses on Renaissance and Early Modern literature, book culture, and intersections between literature and philosophy/politics/religion. Recent work includes studies on intellectual property prehistory (e.g., The Author's Due) and ongoing projects like an Oxford edition of Edmund Spenser's Complete Works and a study titled "Accessorizing the Renaissance," examining material objects and identity in Early Modern England.

He teaches courses on Shakespeare, Milton, Spenser, literary skepticism, cultural poetics of the book, and textual scholarship. Current projects involve collaborative work with students from Arts & Sciences and Engineering.

Professor Loewenstein leads initiatives fostering interdisciplinary humanities research and digital scholarship through his directorships in campus programs.
