About
Joe Larkin is Assistant Professor of Biology and Physics Education at Boston University, researching bacterial electrophysiology and biofilm communities. His lab investigates how microbes engineer their environments through extracellular matrix production, cell signaling, and electrophysiological interactions.
Research combines biophysical approaches with microbial ecology to study signal percolation in bacterial communities, nutrient sharing between biofilms, and electrophysiological control of microbial behavior. His work employs time-lapse microscopy and custom microfluidic devices.
Publications include studies on bacterial signal propagation mechanisms, nanopore-based DNA/protein analysis, and correlated percolation in microbial systems. Current projects examine electrophysiological influences on bacterial metabolism and communication.
