About
Dr Joe Lane is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland's UQ Gas & Energy Transition Research Centre and an Affiliate of the Centre for Policy Futures. His research focuses on life cycle assessment methodologies, carbon capture and storage systems, and sustainable energy transitions, with strong connections to industrial ecology principles.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Queensland
- Masters (Coursework) in Engineering from the University of Queensland
- Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland (2015), with thesis titled 'Life-cycle perspectives for urban water systems planning'
Dr Lane's research spans the critical intersection of environmental systems analysis and energy transition. His work develops and applies life cycle assessment frameworks to evaluate urban water-energy systems, carbon management strategies, and sustainable resource use. He has made significant contributions to understanding the environmental implications of carbon capture technologies, renewable energy deployment, and food-water-energy nexus challenges. His methodological expertise in input-output analysis and multi-scale environmental modeling enables comprehensive assessments of complex sustainability challenges.
His recent publications reveal a clear trajectory toward addressing urgent climate mitigation challenges, with increasing focus on carbon capture infrastructure, energy system transitions, and the environmental implications of renewable energy deployment. His work consistently bridges technical analysis with policy relevance, particularly in the Australian context but with global implications for sustainable development.
As an active researcher, Dr Lane serves as Associate Advisor for multiple PhD candidates working on energy systems, risk assessment in complex systems, and electricity sector transitions. His research is supported by diverse funding sources including industry partners like Santos Limited, Stanmore Resources, and The Australian Gas Industry Trust, as well as government entities like the Queensland Government Department of Energy and Public Works.
Dr Lane is affiliated with the UQ Centre for Natural Gas and contributes to interdisciplinary research through the Centre for Policy Futures, collaborating with researchers across engineering, environmental science, economics, and policy disciplines to address complex sustainability challenges requiring integrated solutions.
