Joe Johnson

Joe Johnson is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics at Mercyhurst University. His roles include teaching, researching STEM education, and advising the Mercyhurst Collegiate Disc Golf Team. He also teaches kickboxing and self-defense classes on campus.

Dr. Johnson’s research focuses on:

• Integration of socio-scientific issues into STEM education
• Technology-enhanced science education
• Equity and cultural relevance in STEM
• Educational strategies for refugee language learners

Grants & Contributions

• Co-Principal Investigator on a $2.8 million NSF DR K-12 grant (collaborating with Arcadia, Villanova, and LaSalle Universities)
• Co-authored a book on internationalizing STEM education
• Published a chapter in the International Encyclopedia of Education
• Consultant for US AID’s STESSA program (advising STEM curriculum development in Egypt)

Personal Interests

A passionate martial artist (Goshin Jutsu karate and Haedong Kumdo), disc golfer, and family man.
