Professor Jock Collins is an Adjunct Fellow and Professor of Social Economics in the Management Discipline Group at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Business School. Having taught and conducted research at UTS since 1977, he is a prominent scholar in immigration and cultural diversity studies. He serves as Co-Director of the Cosmopolitan Civil Societies Research Centre at UTS and has held visiting academic appointments in the UK, Canada, Sweden, and the United States, while also consulting for international organizations like the ILO and OECD.
His research spans immigration studies, ethnic entrepreneurship, multiculturalism, and the social use of ethnic heritage. Collins has made significant contributions to understanding immigrant and refugee entrepreneurship, Indigenous business development, and disability entrepreneurship through a social ecology framework. His work examines how immigrants transform Australian cities, rural areas, and communities through their cultural practices and business ventures.
Collins' recent publications reveal a focus on refugee women's agency, disability entrepreneurship, and the dynamics of immigrant entrepreneurship in Australia's major cities. His research shows patterns of increasing interdisciplinary work, connecting migration studies with business, social ecology, and cultural geography approaches. Professor Collins has secured numerous research grants from the Australian Research Council and other funding bodies, focusing on immigrant settlement, refugee entrepreneurship, Indigenous economic development, and disability entrepreneurship. His research partnerships with organizations like Settlement Services International have directly informed policy and practice in refugee settlement and entrepreneurship support.
As an educator, Collins teaches economics for management, labor market economics, international economics, and economics for leisure and tourism. His scholarly impact is evident in his ten books and over 100 academic articles, which have been translated into multiple languages including Swedish, French, Japanese, Arabic, Dutch, Chinese, Portuguese, German, Turkish, and Italian.
