About
Prof. Jochem Baselmans is a full professor in experimental astronomy at Delft University of Technology and a senior instrument scientist at the SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research. He leads Dutch efforts on Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KIDs) and pioneered the on-chip spectrometer for far-infrared detection. His work includes the Deshima instrument and AMKID camera on APEX, advancing detector technology for space-based observatories.
Education: PhD (summa cum laude) in experimental physics from the University of Groningen (2002), with a thesis on superconducting states in Josephson junctions. Postdoctoral research (2002–2004) focused on Hot Electron Bolometer mixers at SRON.
Research interests span superconductivity, THz sensing, and astrophysical instrumentation. His innovations in MKID technology enable ultra-sensitive detectors critical for future space telescopes. He is also a member of the Global Faculty at the University of Cologne.
Scientific contributions include over 100 publications, with key work on Deshima and AMKID. Awards include his summa cum laude PhD distinction.
Labs/Teams: Leads the THz Sensing Group at TU Delft and collaborates on international projects like APEX and space observatory initiatives.
