Joanne Rhodes

Joanne Rhodes is an Associate Professor of Teaching at the University of Memphis's Department of Physics and Materials Science. She holds a BSEE and BS in Physics from the University of Memphis, followed by a Master of Science in Physics. Her career transitioned from research in adaptive optical systems and radiation dosimetry to a focus on physics education and science literacy. She teaches astronomy and conceptual physics courses, incorporating educational technology such as online platforms for Survey of Astronomy.

Her research interests span cosmology, astrophysics, and innovative teaching methods. She received the 2016 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Briggs Foundation. Rhodes has organized major events like the Lois McGlothlin Donaldson Endowed Lecture Series and led outreach initiatives during the 2017 solar eclipse. She advocates for student engagement through physics film festivals and community education.
