Joanna Plit

Assoc. Prof. Joanna Plit is a retired academic affiliated with the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Her career spans over four decades, including roles at the Archive of the Capital City of Warsaw, Institute of Botany Polish Academy of Sciences (1973–1981), and her primary affiliation from 1982 onward. She holds a PhD in Geographical Sciences (1976) and a habilitated degree in Earth Sciences (1998).

Education:

• 1966–1971: Master’s in Geography at Warsaw University (thesis: 'Output of geological and geomorphological geography in the two-decade post-war period')

Research Focus: Specializes in cartography, physical geography, and environmental history. Her work examines transformations of cultural landscapes, historical vegetation mapping, and anthropogenic/natural environmental changes in Poland. Key areas include agricultural landscape evolution, historical cartography, and biodiversity tracking (e.g., Warsaw’s bird populations).
