Joanie Mackowski is an Associate Professor in the Departments and Programs of Literatures in English at Cornell University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. She specializes in creative writing, with a focus on poetry exploring corporeal experience, ethics, and ecocritical perspectives. Her research also addresses creative practice as research methodology and pedagogical approaches in writing instruction.
Her major works include View From a Temporary Window (2010) and The Zoo (2002, winner of the AWP Poetry Prize and Kate Tufts Discovery Award). Her poetry has appeared in The Yale Review, Raritan, and New England Review. She is currently developing a third poetry collection examining ecocritical themes through lyric forms.
Awarded a Wallace Stegner Fellowship and Rona Jaffe Foundation Grant, Mackowski has contributed to interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Zalaznick Reading Series and EPOCH Magazine. She actively participates in graduate education, overseeing the MFA Program in Creative Writing and PhD Program in English Language and Literature, including procedural guides and timeline management for doctoral candidates.
