About
Dr. Joana Rocha is a Full Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa. She leads the Aeroacoustics Research Laboratory, specializing in aircraft noise prediction, noise reduction, and aeroacoustic testing. Her work focuses on turbulent-flow induced noise, structural-acoustic interactions, and wind tunnel experimentation.
Education: Ph.D. and M.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Victoria.
Research Interests:
- Aircraft noise mitigation strategies
- Optimization of trailing-edge geometries for noise reduction
- High-speed wind tunnel testing methodologies
- Development of predictive models for flow-induced noise
Publications: Over 40 peer-reviewed articles since 2003, emphasizing aeroacoustic modeling, experimental validation, and noise reduction techniques. Recent work addresses serrated trailing-edge airfoils and electric ducted fan acoustics.
Awards:
- NSERC Discovery Grant (2022)
- Early Career Researcher Award (2020)
- CARIC and CRIAQ Grants
Grants & Advising: Secured multi-million dollar funding for aerospace noise research. Advised numerous graduate students in experimental aeroacoustics and structural optimization.
Professional Roles: Board Member of the Canadian Acoustical Association and Associate Editor of Canadian Acoustics journal.
