Joachim Pasel

Dr. Joachim Pasel serves as the Head of the Chemistry of Fuel Synthesis department and leads the Heterogeneous Catalysis research group at the Institute of Energy Technologies - Electrochemical Process Engineering (IET-4) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. With a doctorate in Chemistry from Leipzig University (1996) and a background in chemistry from Ruhr University Bochum, Dr. Pasel has dedicated his career to advancing catalytic processes for sustainable energy solutions since joining Forschungszentrum Jülich in 1998.

Dr. Pasel's research centers on developing catalysts for synthesizing transportation and chemical industry substances without fossil feedstocks, with a particular focus on isobutanol production from renewable methanol and ethanol. His work spans heterogeneous catalysis, catalyst synthesis and characterization, and innovative technologies for nanoparticle deposition on catalyst supports. His research bridges fundamental catalytic science with practical applications in fuel synthesis and conversion processes.

His publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to catalysis science, with recent work focusing on NiPt catalysts for isobutanol synthesis, CO2 electroreduction, and advanced catalyst characterization techniques. His research shows a clear trajectory from fundamental catalyst studies toward practical applications in sustainable fuel production.
