Jing Wang

Jing Wang was the S. C. Fang Professor of Chinese Language and Culture at MIT, affiliated with the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) and the Comparative Media Studies/Writing (CMS) department. She founded the MIT New Media Action Lab and NGO2.0, a nonprofit empowering grassroots Chinese NGOs through digital tools. Educated at National Taiwan University (BA), University of Michigan (MA), and University of Massachusetts Amherst (PhD), her work bridged cultural studies with actionable social impact.

Her research focused on media activism, social media literacy, and China's cultural and political landscape. Notable works include The Other Digital China (2019) and High Culture Fever (1996). Awards included the Joseph Levenson Prize and MIT’s Levitan Teaching Award. She designed initiatives like NGO2.0’s workshops, training over 800 organizations, and collaborated with tech firms to bridge the digital divide.

Wang was also a mentor, remembered for her generosity and advocacy for social justice. Her legacy includes the Candy R. Wei Travel Endowment and cross-border projects like the NGO Evaluation Databank. Colleagues celebrated her intellectual rigor and commitment to marginalized communities.
