Jim Overton is a Professor of Sociology at Memorial University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research examines social and economic development, nationalism, culture, environmental sociology, tourism, and social policy. Overton specializes in British and Canadian social history with particular focus on Newfoundland society and politics.
He holds a PhD in Geography and has published extensively on Newfoundland's social history, including works on violence and public anxiety, and tourism development. Overton is currently writing a book on the politics of resettlement in Newfoundland.
