About
Roles & Affiliations
Professor Jian Li, FAA, FAAM, FAHMS, holds a dual appointment as a Professor (Research) at the Department of Microbiology, Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, Monash University. He leads the Antimicrobial Systems Pharmacology Laboratory and serves as Editor-in-Chief of The International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents. His work focuses on optimizing polymyxin therapy, discovering novel antimicrobial agents, and combatting multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens.
Education
- PhD in Microbiology (2002)
Research Interests
Dr Li's research spans antimicrobial pharmacology, systems pharmacology, and computational biology. His lab investigates mechanisms of polymyxin resistance, develops dosing guidelines for last-line antibiotics, and explores synergistic antibiotic combinations. Key targets include Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Grants & Projects
- Major NIH R01 grant (2023-2028) for systems pharmacology approaches
- Australian NHMRC/ARC-funded projects targeting antimicrobial resistance
- Industry partnerships for drug development (e.g., BRII-693 clinical trials)
Awards & Recognition
- Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher (2015–2017, 2022)
- Australian Academy of Science Fellow (since 2017)
- Jacques Miller Medal (2017) for biomedical discovery
Lab & Collaborations
His laboratory collaborates globally (e.g., NIH/NIAID, Kyoto University) and integrates in silico modeling with experimental pharmacology. Current projects include AI-driven drug design, phage therapy optimization, and metabolomic profiling of antibiotic resistance pathways.
