Jessica Smith

Dr. Jessica Smith is an Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Southampton. She specializes in political behavior, gender-based stereotyping, and British politics, serving as Co-Director of the Gender and Inequalities (GAIN) Research Centre and convenor of the Political Studies Women and Politics Group.

Research Focus

Her research examines bias in political systems through multiple lenses:

• Gender dynamics in electoral politics and leadership
• Representation mechanisms in democratic systems
• Executive decision-making processes
• Media portrayals of political figures
• Voter perception and behavioral patterns

Current projects investigate gender disparities in legislative evaluations and parental leave policies.

Teaching & Supervision

Teaches undergraduate methods, British politics, and specialized modules in gender politics and political psychology. Currently supervises two PhD candidates researching political systems and gender dynamics.
