Professor · Neutrophil-based Inflammation
University of Texas Southwestern Medical CenterAbout
Jessica Moreland is a Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology, and holds the Thomas Fariss Marsh, Jr. Chair in Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She serves as the Division Chief of Pediatric Critical Care and previously held leadership roles at the University of Iowa, including tenure-track faculty positions since 1998. Her research focuses on neutrophil-based inflammation, particularly the role of NADPH oxidase (Nox2) in priming, inflammation resolution, and translational studies in pediatric critical care. She leads the Moreland Lab, which investigates innate immune system functions using basic science, in vivo models, and clinical studies.
Education: B.S. in Zoology (Duke University), M.D. (Vanderbilt University), residency/fellowship in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care (Vanderbilt University). Key research projects include mechanisms of neutrophil priming in sepsis, cardiopulmonary bypass outcomes, and diabetic ketoacidosis. Awards include the Thomas Fariss Marsh Chair.
Her lab explores topics like Nox2-derived ROS in inflammation resolution, macrophage roles in lung injury, and neutrophil activation in pediatric conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. Collaborative efforts aim to translate findings into improved clinical outcomes for inflammatory diseases.
