About
Jessica Gill is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University with primary appointments in the School of Nursing and School of Medicine, Department of Neurology. A national leader in traumatic brain injury (TBI) research, she investigates biological mechanisms and biomarkers to identify patients at high risk for poor recovery and long-term effects including PTSD, depression, and post-concussive syndrome across military personnel, athletes, and civilian populations.
Education:
- PhD, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing
Her research integrates neurology, neurobiology, and military/veteran health to develop targeted interventions for TBI. Specializing in biomarker discovery, she examines genetic, sleep, and mental health factors influencing differential recovery trajectories, with significant implications for clinical practice and military health policy.
Scientific Awards:
- 2020: Research Excellence Award for TBI Biomarkers, Military Health Systems Research Symposium (MHSRS)
- 2020: Office of Director Award-NIH
- 2019: Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine, Outstanding Senior Investigator
- 2018: NIH CC Directors Award for concussion research
- 2017: Fellow, American Academy of Nursing
- 2016: Johns Hopkins Distinguished Alumnus Award
- 2015: Linfield College Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award
- 2014: National Academies of Science Kavli Frontiers Science Fellow
- 2014: NIH Distinguished Post-Baccalaureate Mentor Award
- 2013: Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)
- 2012: Lasker Clinical Research Scholar at NIH
- 2007: Johns Hopkins Outstanding Dissertation Award
Dr. Gill secured the prestigious Lasker Clinical Research Scholar Award (NIH's highest research grant) as the first nurse recipient, demonstrating exceptional grant leadership. Her mentorship excellence was recognized with the NIH Distinguished Post-Baccalaureate Mentor Award. She directs the PRECEDE Biomarkers Laboratory and maintains affiliations with the Center for Equity in Aging and Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine.
