Jessica Dallow is a Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), based in office AEIVA 229. She holds both an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her research examines intersections of race, gender, and animal representations in American art, with specializations in Modern/Contemporary American Art, African American Art, Animals in Art, and Human-Animal Relations.
Her scholarly work extends to theories of family in art history and Southern self-taught art, evidenced by publications in journals like Nineteenth-Century Art Worldwide and contributions to volumes such as Equestrian Cultures and Family Legacies: The Art of Betye, Lezley, and Alison Saar. Her 2022 book analyzes equine art through racial and gender perspectives across two centuries.
At UAB, she teaches courses including Art since 1945, Art Criticism and Theory, Race and Representation, and Modern Architecture. She directs a student-driven digital archive project documenting Birmingham artists. Research grants from the Virginia Historical Society, Kentucky Historical Society, and UAB have supported her work.
