About
Jesse Ray Zamudio is an Associate Professor in the Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology department at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), affiliated with the College of Letters and Science. His research focuses on RNA biology, gene regulation, epigenetics, cancer, and stem cells. Zamudio earned a B.S. in Chemistry & Biochemistry from UCLA in 2003, a Ph.D. in Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics from UCLA in 2008, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cancer Genomics at MIT in 2016.
Research Interests: Zamudio investigates mechanisms of genomic stability via mammalian Argonaute proteins and the role of microRNAs in developmental processes. His work spans long noncoding RNAs, RNA interference, and transcriptional networks in cancer progression and stem cell biology.
Publication Trends: His recent studies highlight RNA biology in metastasis, genome stability, and single-cell transcriptomics. Themes include tumor microenvironment reprogramming, inflammatory signaling in cancer, and RNA-mediated gene regulation.
Research Funding: Zamudio leads two NIH grants:
- NIH R01GM143536 (2021–2025) on Mechanisms of Genomic Stability by Mammalian Argonaute Proteins
- NIH F32CA139902 (2009–2012) on In vivo characterization of microRNA regulation
Laboratory: The Zamudio Lab explores RNA biology, epigenetics, and their roles in cancer and developmental processes, collaborating on topics like single-cell transcriptomics and microRNA dynamics.
