Jesse Freedman is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Global Musicology at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. Previously, he served as Visiting Assistant Professor at St. Joseph’s University (Philadelphia) and taught at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) and Caldwell University (NJ).
Education: PhD in Music (UC Riverside), MM in Classical Guitar Performance (USC), BM in Music (Guilford College).
Research focuses on ethnomusicological analyses of Latin American political song movement nueva canción in the former GDR, sound-space relationships in post-reunification Germany, and transnational music cultures. Recent work interrogates how sonic practices negotiate memory and identity in East Germany's post-socialist landscape.
Publications appear in Music and Politics, Yearbook for Traditional Music, Latin American Perspectives, and Crossings: Journal of Migration and Culture. His research has received funding from Fulbright and DAAD. Teaching emphasizes global musicology, political music studies, and critical ethnomusicology.
