Jesse Alemán

Dr. Jesse Alemán is a Professor of English and a Presidential Teaching Fellow at the University of New Mexico’s Department of English Language and Literature. His research focuses on 19th-century American and US Latinx literary/cultural histories, Chicano/a literatures, Southwestern film, and race studies. He has authored books like Latinx Civil Wars (forthcoming, NYU Press) and republished The Woman in Battle. He co-edited volumes such as Empire and the Literature of Sensation and The Latino Nineteenth Century. He has directed nearly 20 doctoral dissertations.

Dr. Alemán has received numerous awards, including the Wertheim Award, STARS Award, and Presidential Teaching Fellow distinction. His scholarly work bridges historical analysis with cultural critique, emphasizing marginalized voices in 19th-century contexts. He actively contributes to academic discourse through peer-reviewed articles and editorial work.
