Jess K Smith is a Professor of Theatre Arts at the University of Puget Sound, where she teaches directing, acting, and interdisciplinary performance. She specializes in site-specific performances, feminist theatre, and collaborations across disciplines including dance, sculpture, and music. Her work has been showcased at institutions such as Playwrights Horizons, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and 3LD, with performances in locations ranging from New York to Prague.
Education: BA in Theatre Arts (with honors) and Psychology from the University of Puget Sound (2005), MFA in Directing from Columbia University (2011). Professional training includes SITI Company, Punchdrunk, and Deja Donne (Italy).
Research focuses on reimagining classic works through feminist lenses and experimental spatial practices. Her essay 'The Hero in the Human' explores interdisciplinary approaches to performance. She co-founded LAB, an interdisciplinary training program for Seattle artists, and has served on advisory boards for Macha Monkey Productions and Northwest Playwrights Alliance.
Prior to Puget Sound, she taught full-time at Middlesex County College and maintained a freelance directing career in NYC. Current courses include Theatrical Experience, Directing, and Senior Theatre Festival.
