Jerzy Kosmala

Jerzy Kosmala is a Lecturer in Viola at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Department of Music. Internationally recognized as a concert violist and pedagogue, he has performed across Europe, the former Soviet Union, North and South America, Asia, and South Africa, with recordings on Orion, Vox/MGM, and Centaur labels. He frequently appears as a guest artist at major festivals, universities, and conservatories worldwide, including the Royal Academy of Music (London), Mozarteum (Salzburg), Juilliard, Eastman School of Music, and Boston University.

Kosmala's research and professional focus centers on advanced viola performance, pedagogy, and the adaptation of contemporary compositions for viola. His work bridges classical chamber music traditions with modern interpretative techniques, emphasizing cross-cultural collaborations and education.

As a prominent figure in viola competitions, he serves as a permanent jury member for prestigious events such as the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, Geneva International Viola Competition, and the International Primrose Viola Competition. He was previously a member of the executive board of the American Viola Society.

Kosmala has premiered numerous contemporary works—some written specifically for him—and has played with the Krakow String Quartet and Eastman String Quartet. His career highlights include engagements at institutions like Royal College, Guildhall School of Music, Dresden Conservatory, and Hong Kong School of Music.
