Jerry Won Lee

Jerry Won Lee is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), serving as Director of the International Center for Writing & Translation and the Program in Global Languages & Cultures. He holds affiliate roles in Anthropology, Comparative Literature, East Asian Studies, Asian American Studies, and the PhD Program in Culture & Theory.

Lee earned his PhD from the University of Arizona in 2014. His research focuses on translingualism, globalization of languages, border studies (literal/figurative), multilingualism, and language’s role in marginalized communities. His award-winning book *Locating Translingualism* (2022) explores language practices in transnational contexts. Recent works include *Language as Hope* (2024, co-authored with Daniel Silva), examining how marginalized communities use language for survival and hope.

His research spans sociolinguistics, cultural studies, and literary analysis, with emphasis on global Englishes, Korean hip-hop, Brazilian peripheries, and Korean national discourse. Lee’s current projects include co-editing *The Handbook of Translanguaging* (Wiley-Blackwell) and *Imagined Antagonisms* (with Chungjae Lee).

Awarded the 2024 American Association for Applied Linguistics Book Award, Lee’s work bridges interdisciplinary methodologies across language studies, cultural theory, and global South frameworks. He mentors PhD students across multiple disciplines, emphasizing transdisciplinary approaches to knowledge.
