Jeremy Smith

Jeremy Smith is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean – Education at the Australian National University (ANU), affiliated with the ANU College of Systems & Society and the School of Engineering. He has held roles in research, education, and commercialization at ANU since 1998, with a focus on humanitarian engineering, engineering education, and systems engineering. He currently serves as the Chair of the Systems Engineering Core Discipline Committee, Director of the ANU NAE Grand Challenge Scholar Program, and Convenor of the Humanitarian Engineering Program.

His research interests include humanitarian engineering, appropriate technology, technology development and implementation, and engineering education. He has led initiatives to integrate systems engineering into bachelor’s degrees and promote community-led solutions for flood resilience and sustainable development. His work emphasizes collaboration with communities in Australia, PNG, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste, focusing on socio-technical systems and inclusive design.

In addition to his academic roles, Jeremy has been instrumental in developing engineering curricula and programs. He has coordinated courses in humanitarian and systems engineering at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels since 2007. His involvement includes fostering partnerships between academia and NGOs, such as Engineers Without Borders Australia. He has also contributed to grant initiatives aimed at enhancing learning programs and community engagement.

Jeremy is affiliated with the ANU Institute for Climate, Energy and Disaster Solutions (ICEDS) and serves as Secretary of the Engineers Australia Humanitarian Engineering Community of Practice. These affiliations support his work in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and community-centered engineering solutions.
