Jeremy Sheff is a Professor of Law and Founding Director of the Intellectual Property Law Center at St. John’s University School of Law. He joined the faculty in 2008 and has held roles including Assistant Professor (2008–2011), Associate Professor (2011–2014), and Professor (2014–present). He also teaches at NYU School of Law and Cardozo School of Law, and has served as an Invited Overseas Researcher at the Institute of Intellectual Property in Tokyo, Japan.
Sheff earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School (cum laude, 2002) and B.A. from Columbia University (summa cum laude, 1999). After clerking for Judge C. P. Sifton of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, he practiced as a litigation associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, specializing in intellectual property and commercial disputes.
His research focuses on intellectual property law, law and technology, property law, and legal theory, exploring how law mediates information and knowledge in societal contexts. He has authored over 20 publications, including books like Open Source Property: A Free Casebook (2016) and articles on trademark law, empirical evaluations, and philosophical approaches to IP scholarship.
Sheff’s awards include the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Scholarship (2013–2014) and the Best New Professor Award (2008–2009). He has presented at numerous conferences, including the Intellectual Property Scholars Conference and the University of Houston Institute for Intellectual Property and Information Law.
