Jeremy C. Borniger

Jeremy C. Borniger is an Assistant Professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), affiliated with the Cancer Center. He holds a PhD in Neuroscience from The Ohio State University (2017) and completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University (2017–2019). His research focuses on the bidirectional interactions between cancer and the brain, particularly how tumors disrupt neural circuits and how these disruptions affect systemic symptoms like sleep disturbances, metabolic changes, and cognitive impairment. His lab employs systems neuroscience techniques, including optogenetics and calcium imaging, to study mechanisms underlying cancer-induced physiological changes.

Key research interests include cancer-associated systemic dysfunction, hypothalamic regulation of cancer processes, and the development of therapies targeting brain-body communication. Notable achievements include discoveries about hypocretin/orexin neuron activation by tumors and the role of brain circuits in cancer progression. Awards include the NARSAD Young Investigator Award (2019) and the W.C. Young Recent Graduate Award (2018).

Borniger teaches courses on sleep and cancer at CSHL and is involved in public outreach, including media collaborations and educational initiatives like NeuroPhDee Twitch streams. His work bridges cancer biology and neuroscience, contributing to the emerging field of cancer neuroscience.
