Jeremy Breaden is an Associate Professor of Japanese Studies and Deputy Head of the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics at Monash University. He also serves as Director of the Bachelor of Global Studies and chairs the Management Committee of the Monash Japanese Language Education Centre. Previously, he worked as an international communications consultant in Japan before transitioning to academia in 2011. His research focuses on transnational and intercultural dimensions of education and employment in Japan and East Asia, with notable projects on meritocracy in postwar Japan and West Germany (funded by the Australian Research Council), migrant entrepreneurs in rural Japan (Toyota Foundation), and virtual mobility initiatives. He co-convenes the Online Intercultural Exchange Research Cluster and coordinates Monash’s Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) programs like the Social Entrepreneurship Challenge in the Indo-Pacific.
His teaching includes Japanese Studies and Global Asia majors, with units such as ATS3089 (Social Institutions and Power in Asia) and ATS2648 (Contemporary Japan). Jeremy’s work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and reducing inequalities. He actively supervises postgraduate and Honours students on topics ranging from sociolegal issues in Japan to globalisation’s impact on East Asian institutions.
Jeremy has collaborated internationally on projects exploring Japan’s higher education system, multiculturalism, and policy transfer. His publications span journals like Social Science Japan Journal and Higher Education Research & Development, with a focus on institutional reform, virtual mobility, and multilingual identities.
