About
Prof. Jens Rolff is a Professor of Evolutionary Biology at Freie Universität Berlin’s Institute of Biology - Zoology. He leads the Rolff Group, focusing on insect immunity, bacterial resistance evolution, and metamorphosis. His research integrates evolutionary ecology, microbiology, and immunology, with collaborations in global projects like the DFG-funded InsectInfect consortium and Berlin University Alliance’s GlobalResist initiative.
Research interests include antimicrobial peptide efficacy, pathogen virulence evolution, and the ecological implications of complete metamorphosis. Key projects explore host-microbiota-pathogen interactions and the pharmacodynamics of antimicrobial resistance. His lab investigates model organisms like Tenebrio molitor and Drosophila, with recent studies on damselfly phylogeography and bifurcating infections.
Recent publications highlight work on antimicrobial peptide combinations, bacterial persistence mechanisms, and the genetic basis of resistance. Collaborations span institutions like the University of Giessen and the Max Planck Institute. Rolff advises multiple PhD students and has mentored alumni now leading roles in academia and industry.
