About
Dr. Jens Rittscher is a Professor of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, holding a joint academic appointment between the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and the Nuffield Department of Medicine. He is also a Professorial Research Fellow, a Fellow of Harris Manchester College, and a group leader at the Oxford Big Data Institute. His roles include co-director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Health Data Science and membership on the UK EPSRC Healthcare Technologies Strategic Advisory Team.
Dr. Rittscher earned his Diploma in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Bonn (Germany) and his DPhil from the University of Oxford under Andrew Blake’s Visual Dynamics Group as a Marie Curie Fellow. Prior to Oxford, he led the Computer Vision Laboratory at GE Global Research (2001–2013).
His research focuses on advancing biomedical imaging through computational algorithms and platforms, particularly in cancer mechanistic understanding and patient care via image analysis. Additional expertise spans video surveillance, seismic data interpretation, and computational pathology, with a spin-off company (Ground Truth Labs Ltd) commercializing pathology research.
He previously served as Adjunct Assistant Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and chaired the IEEE ISBI Steering Committee (2018–2020). His work integrates engineering science with clinical and genomic research, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration across Oxford’s biomedical and data science ecosystems.
