Jenny Libien is a Professor of Pathology and Neurology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, where she also serves as Chair of Pathology. She holds an MD and PhD from SUNY Downstate, completed in 2001, followed by a residency in Anatomic Pathology / Neuropathology at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Columbia University Medical Center (2001-2005).
Her research focuses on cellular dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, particularly studying cognitive resilience in individuals with neurodegenerative pathology. She collaborates with Dr. Alejandro Ivan Hernandez to explore epigenetic regulation of rDNA and potential interventions to promote cognitive health.
Libien’s publications center on neurodegeneration, vitamin A metabolism, neuropathology, and neuro-ophthalmology, with recent work on retinoid-binding proteins, PARP-1 as a biomarker, and therapeutic calpain inhibitors. She has contributed to studies on rare infections, cerebrovascular models, and liver metabolism in disease.
Her academic work spans collaborations across neuroscience, biochemistry, and clinical medicine, with a strong emphasis on translational research. She has authored textbook chapters on statistic methods in pathology and neurovascular coupling imaging.
