Jennifer R. Smith

Jennifer R. Smith is the Vice Provost for Educational Initiatives and a Professor of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Washington University. She holds a courtesy appointment as Professor of Environmental Studies. Her research focuses on Quaternary Geology, Geoarchaeology, and Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction, examining human-environment interactions through sedimentological and geochemical analyses.

She assumed the role of Vice Provost in July 2021, overseeing educational initiatives. Her work integrates climatic changes' impact on human resources and vice versa, using interdisciplinary methods. She has been recognized for teaching excellence, as noted in a 2023 university announcement.
