Jennifer Martin is an Assistant Professor of Teacher Education at the University of Illinois Springfield, part of the College of Education and Human Services. She joined UIS in Fall 2018 and holds a doctorate in education from Oakland University, along with master’s degrees in English and Liberal Studies from Eastern Michigan University.
Her research focuses on educational equity, LGBTQ+ rights in schools, and systemic racism in education. Notably, she co-authored the award-winning 2017 article "The Bathroom Case: Creating a Supportive School Environment for Transgender and Gender Non-conforming Students," which received the Paula Silver Case Award from the UCEA. This work examines Title IX compliance and gender identity issues in school facilities.
Her broader scholarship spans critical race theory, feminist pedagogy, and resistance to institutional inequities. Recent articles address anti-Blackness in education, equity during the pandemic, and intersectional online learning communities.
