Jennifer Allen Simons

Jennifer Allen Simons, C.M., Ph.D., LL.D., is an Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) School for International Studies and a Senior Fellow at SFU’s Centre for Dialogue. She is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Queensland. Her work focuses on nuclear disarmament, peace advocacy, and global cooperation, with leadership roles in organizations like the Physicists Coalition for Nuclear Threat Reduction and Global Zero. She chairs initiatives such as the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and co-founded the Simons Centre for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation at UBC.

Dr. Simons has held governance roles on multiple university boards, including SFU and the University of Northern British Columbia. She has been appointed to Canadian government delegations for Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) conferences and serves on international steering committees, including Pugwash Conferences and the Middle Powers Initiative. Her contributions to disarmament education include founding the Graduate Research Awards for Disarmament and establishing academic chairs in disarmament at UBC.

Notable awards include the Order of Canada (2010), Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and the Ursula Franklin Award for Distinction (2019). Her initiatives, such as the Outer Space Security Conference Series and partnerships with Global Affairs Canada, underscore her commitment to preventing arms races in space and advancing human security.
