University of Massachusetts LowellAbout
Jenifer Whitten Woodring serves as Dean of the Honors College and Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She holds leadership roles as Vice President of the International Studies Association and Chair of the Commonwealth Honors Council. Her academic foundation includes a Ph.D. in Politics and International Relations from the University of Southern California (2010), an M.S. in Radio/TV/Film from Syracuse University (1989), and a B.F.A. in Communication from Emerson College (1987).
Her research examines media freedom's intersection with human rights, repression-dissent dynamics, and political communication, with emphasis on gendered rights and global south contexts. She employs game theory and quantitative methods to analyze media's role in societal conflicts.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on media freedom impacts: from censorship mechanisms (2024) and social media's political consequences (2020) to LGBTQ+ rights (2017) and conflict journalism (2016). Her work reveals patterns connecting digital access, human rights enforcement, and state-society power balances across regimes.
Awards include:
- Center for Women and Work Associate (2011)
- Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society (2010)
- Best Paper in International Communication (2009)
- The Letty and Peter Toma Prize for Scholarship/Research (2009)
Despite administrative duties, she mentors graduate/undergraduate researchers and chairs dissertation committees for the Global Studies PhD program. She co-leads the Global Academic Freedom Project and has a forthcoming book on media freedom with Columbia University Press.
