Jen Rose Smith is an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington's Department of Geography. A dAXunhyuu (Eyak, Alaska Native) scholar, her work focuses on coloniality, race, and indigeneity through aesthetic contributions, archival evidence, and embodied knowledges. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley, an M.A. from the same department, and a B.A. in English Literature and the Environment from the University of Alaska Southeast.
Her research explores intersections of indigenous geographies, colonial politics, and environmental humanities. Key themes include Arctic studies, critical human geography, and the socio-spatial dimensions of indigenous identity. Her forthcoming book Ice Geographies: The Colonial Politics of Race and Indigeneity in the Arctic (Duke University Press, 2025) challenges colonial narratives in Arctic studies.
